Steps to Prepare a Car for Shipping

Steps to Prepare a Car for Shipping

If you want to move your car from your old home to the new one, probably, there will be a need for shipping. One of the major aspects of transporting an auto is to get it ready for the transportation. While the driver is responsible for a car transporting, you are responsible for preparing your car for shipping. Here are 12 important things that are essential to follow before you let car shipping company transport your auto. These steps can help you to minimize the risk of destruction or damage as well as secure your vehicle while moving.

Step 1 Wash Your Automobile

Why there is a necessity to do this? The thing is that dirt and dust can hide scratches. Therefore, you have to wash it by the date when the vehicle will be picked up by the car shipping company.

  • Also, a good idea is to take photos of the auto, so you will be able to compare the car before and after shipping.
  • Then take a walk around it and note if there are any dents. Pay attention to making a list of already existed defects.

Step 2 Complete a closer inspection

After you have already ended the visual inspection of the exterior, it is time to check the undercarriage. If you saw some leaks, fix it as soon as possible. Besides, take notice of your car’s odometer. Your vehicle would be not driven while transporting except the case of getting it on and off the transport lorry.

Step 3 Turn Off Your Alarm System

Whether your car has an alarm system or not, there is a need to disable it. If you forget to do this, your alarm will be triggering during transportation.

Step 4 Check Tire Pressure

In order to lower the risk of tires’ damage, you should inflate it properly. It means that under-inflated or over-inflated tires can cause problems on the road.

Step 5 Check Battery

Be sure that battery in your vehicle has a full charge.

Step 6 Get Personal Things Out

Remove the objects that can be tossed inside of your vehicle. Things like spare change, air fresheners, trash, tools, equipment, and other items should be taken out. Don’t forget to take away electronics like GPS navigation system and DVD player in order to save them from damages.

  • If you want to load your car with the boxes or other moving materials, think twice. The reason is that the heavier will be your car the higher will be the price of the shipping.
  • But things like a spare tire, emergency kit, and jack may be left in the trunk.

Step 7 Don’t Gas Up Much

As your automobile is being shipped, there is no need to refuel it. Moreover, having a full tank makes the car heavier. Just to be safe, leave as less as possible petrol in the tank before transporting.

Step 8 Deactivate Automatic Parking Passes or Toll Tags

It is better to take out all the automatic passes and toll tags because you will not need them during the car shipping. If you leave toll tag, it will collect the fees from each toll that it will be passing through.

Step 9 Get Your Vehicle Insured

Firstly ask whether the shipping company you have chosen carries a valid insurance certificate. It is important to find out if the company cover any damages and if the entire car is insured or just some parts. Anyway, check your current car insurance just to be sure if it covers a long-distance car shipping. Actually, it is not a big deal, but double protection will never be excessive.

  • If your car will be not insured during the transportation, you will be completely responsible for any defects.

Step 10 Lock The Car

When you have already inspected everything and the automobile was loaded onto the transport truck, there is no cause to open it. Having said that there are some cases when the driver may ask you for the keys. If such happens, it is better to have an extra key in case of another one can be lost during the transportation.

Step 11 Bill of Lading

This document includes information about any existed damages at the moment of pick up the automobile. The driver and you should check it together to be sure that both of them agree on with the existing damages and then sigh in the given document.

Step 12 Confirm Contact Information

Almost every truck driver has his own cell phone. You should take his contact before shipping to have the opportunity (if there will be such need) to find out some necessary details about the car transportation. In case the driver doesn’t have the direct contact, the company must have some way of tracking your shipment. Make sure that you have all required information.
